Episode 69: Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas – From Fruit to Fire Ants

From Fruit to Fire Ants

Episode 69

Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas

Shane and Phil chat about “The Pearl of Africa.” While flying helicopters in Botswana, Shane got in the habit of asking the well-traveled people he met, “What’s the one place you think is a must-see?”

The answer that came up most often was, “You must go see the gorillas.” Shane shares the research and the reason he chose Uganda as the country from which to see the Mountain Gorillas.

We’re taught not to anthropomorphize animals but Shane says that’s difficult while watching a silverback pick his nose just like your Uncle Billy sometimes does at the dinner table. You’ll get to trek along on two different days with two very different family groups and Shane will share the darker side of harems.

Take a trip up the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls to watch bird nerds get epic shots of a life-lister and ignore the hippos, crocs and elephants. A myriad of bananas and crowded towns round out the observations in this land-locked country the size of Iowa with over fifty recognized languages.

In this episode, Shane talks about traveling around Uganda, handy things to have, and a side safari.

Episode 64: Morocco by Motorcycle with Clay Bastion – Morocco’s Modern “Old World” Culture, Travel Tips

Old and New

Episode 64

Morocco with

Clay Bastion

“How about Morocco?” Thanks to Clay Bastion, this question gets answered. Join us for a conversation with this North African gem of a country at its center. Clay Bastion has traveled via two wheels with and without MotoQuest Founder, Phil Freeman. Clay is cool under pressure, willing to pitch in and a generous spirit. He can hang; at the Dakar Rally, on the back of a camel or on a rooftop without guardrails.

Walk the Marrakech Medina. Learn how to barter with some of the best in the world. If you don’t say, “No,” be prepared to carry something that you didn’t want or need along on the rest of the trip. Moroccan Math Equations, inches of skin multiplied by kilometers from the beach divided by inches of clothing, there will be a test.

Clay introduced the idea of scouting trips to Phil over a decade ago. These trips are first forays into new lands. Riders who sign up know that it will involve hiccups, getting lost, break downs without spares and more and also, less. That pain is part of the fun. These are Zombie apocalypse first round draft picks. Clay makes the cut. He knows that no matter what, you don’t feed the monkeys.

In this episode Phil and Clay talk about the modern and ancient influences in Morocco and give some travel tips.
