Old and New

Episode 64

Morocco with

Clay Bastion

“How about Morocco?” Thanks to Clay Bastion, this question gets answered. Join us for a conversation with this North African gem of a country at its center. Clay Bastion has traveled via two wheels with and without MotoQuest Founder, Phil Freeman. Clay is cool under pressure, willing to pitch in and a generous spirit. He can hang; at the Dakar Rally, on the back of a camel or on a rooftop without guardrails.

Walk the Marrakech Medina. Learn how to barter with some of the best in the world. If you don’t say, “No,” be prepared to carry something that you didn’t want or need along on the rest of the trip. Moroccan Math Equations, inches of skin multiplied by kilometers from the beach divided by inches of clothing, there will be a test.

Clay introduced the idea of scouting trips to Phil over a decade ago. These trips are first forays into new lands. Riders who sign up know that it will involve hiccups, getting lost, break downs without spares and more and also, less. That pain is part of the fun. These are Zombie apocalypse first round draft picks. Clay makes the cut. He knows that no matter what, you don’t feed the monkeys.

IIn this episode Phil and Clay talk about the modern and ancient influences in Morocco and give some travel tips.

Episode 21: Ayleen Martinez – Solo Motorcyclist

The three costs of life.

Episode 21

Ayleen Martinez – Solo Motorcyclist

Ayleen talks about her free time on the road, and what it is like to be on her own for so long. She also talks about the 3 costs in life.

Meet Ayleen

A sniper, a dentist and a motorcycle rider walk into a bar. This is not the start to a joke, this is one amazing person named Ayleen Martinez. Ayleen rode into Phil’s life through a dual hemisphere resident whom we’ll call Mariska. When Phil heard that a Chilean woman decided she wanted to learn how to ride motorcycles so she could do a solo ride from Puerto Williams to Prudhoe Bay, he rolled up the doors at MotoQuest World Headquarters. Ayleen is intelligent, enthusiastic, funny and just a little stubborn. Basically the perfect mix if you want to follow the path just a little further off the path off the unbeaten path. Over 20,000 humans follow Señorita Martinez on the ‘gram. We spoke with Ayleen in 2019. She shares some highlights, some low points and a few things to consider as a solo traveler who happens to be a spritely female about a meter and a half tall. We hope you enjoy our conversation.
